INTRODUCTION

There are several anthropologists who are well known and have become famous through their contributions to science and the humanities: archaeologists find hidden sites; paleoanthropologists discover new fossils; cultural anthropologists bring to light patterns across the globe; and linguists preserve endangered languages. One way to familiarize yourself with the different types of anthropologists is to investigate one of them. Here you will have your opportunity to do so and to share your famous anthropologist with all of us!

RESEARCH

Conduct research (in your textbook or online) to find a famous anthropologist. The person MUST deal explicitly with ancient or modern humans or non-human primates (monkeys, apes, prosimians) from an anthropological perspective. (No dinosaurs, no rocks, please! Geologists study those topics. And no dogs or other animals except primates!)

The person can be someone from the past or present. Find out about the person and where she/he is from, when they lived, etc. Be sure to find out information about this individual’s contribution to anthropology and why they are famous for it.

DISCUSSION

Answer the following questions for your initial discussion post or commentary by Sunday. Label your responses according to each of the numbered questions since it facilitates reading for everyone. All work must be your own.

1. References

Provide full bibliographic citations using APA style for all sources for the information you obtained. Instructions for using the APA style are posted in this week’s module.

Wikipedia is NOT a good source and should not ever be used.

2. Biographical Summary

Write two to three paragraphs in your own words that accurately summarize the personal information about this biological anthropologist This section should be several sentences long. (Do not plagiarize your sources.)

3. Relation of Scientist to Anthropology

In what ways did/does this scientist significantly contribute to anthropology? In particular, discuss the field of anthropology to which the person contributed. Be sure to write at least one full paragraph (5 sentences or more).
